Helen, Darin, and their three children were connected to Sr. Julie Marsh at Hotel Hope after she received a call from a priest in Metairie about the family of five, who had been sleeping in their car near his church for months. The family, having lost their SSI and food stamps due to the lack of a permanent address, had been going to the church for gas money and food. Immediately after the call, Sr. Julie connected the family to a number of resources that would work together to secure permanent housing. As UNITY assisted with verifying the family’s homelessness, Traveler’s Aid Society provided case management and helped collect all of the necessary documentation needed for approval for housing. Due to physical and mental disabilities, the family was approved for Responsibility House’s Permanent Supportive Housing Program, Pathways PSH, and just this past week, they moved into their new home! With Pathways case management, the family is working to reinstate their SSI benefits, and have already started receiving food stamps again!
Our Goal for the Home for the Holidays Campaign: Working together, the New Orleans-Jefferson Parish community will house 50 homeless families before the holidays!
