The importance of the Times-Picayune to the poor

Mr. Clifford Burchfield, pictured above, sleeps in an abandoned building in New Orleans with no plumbing, electricity or running water, but he still devours the news every day from the Times-Picayune newspaper.

Last month McClatchy ran an article about the importance of the Times-Picayune to New Orleanians. Martha Kegel, UNITY’s Executive Director, was interviewed for the article: “The paper has its faults, but has been absolutely essential to the city’s recovery,” she said. “If ever a city needed a daily newspaper it is New Orleans.” You can read the full article here.

The Times-Picayune is critical to the future of New Orleans. We are encouraging everyone to sign the petition calling on Advance Publications to re-hire the over 200 employees they laid off, and maintain 7 days/week publication. The petition can be signed online here.
